3 Count: Smoke and Mirrors

In 3 Count, Three Man Booth will Discuss Wrestling & Wrestling Related Music:
The Good, The Bad & The Cheesy

The WWE Universe is still reeling from the events of this week’s RAW.  Superstars are afraid to speak up, Daniel Bryan keeps getting beat down and the Big Show hasn’t had a dry eye for 2 weeks. But the biggest shock was Cody Rhodes being fired by Triple H after losing a hard fought match to WWE Champion Randy Orton. That also means that Cody’s theme, “Smoke and Mirrors”, will not be heard on WWE programming anymore.

That is the Emphatic version which is both the name of the band and a good description of the what the song captures: that that extra aggression that Cody needs to tap into occasionally is part of the song’s crunch. It is something you need when facing Randy Orton under a “Win or You’re Fired” stipulation (Thanks, Triple H). There is another version of this theme, TV/TV’s more Dashing one if you will.  Their version is catchier and more addictive: not only will it get stuck in your head, but you will also be compelled to hum / sing it no matter where you are. This happened to John Cena who, while walking around backstage before Monday Night Raw, started Smoke and Mirror-izing everything.

This Monday, it’s a new day (it’s a new day) in the WWE. One without Cody Rhodes. Hopefully, that won’t be the Legacy for the former 2-time Intercontinental Champion.

Highlight Reel: Wrestler Roll Call

In Highlight Reel, 3MB will look at funny and interesting wrestling videos

Fall is drawing near as all the telltale signs are coming into place. School is starting back, leaves are beginning to turn colors and NFL Football is back to causally airing opposite iMPACT on Thursdays, dominating our Sundays and going head to head with RAW on Mondays. We’ll continue to foolishly cheer on the Cincinnati Bengals; that team will surprise you just like former teammate Brian “Loose Cannon” Pillman surprised the wrestling world. But every season brings about football players incorporating wrestling gestures into their celebrations, like channeling Razor Ramon after a Touchdown or  Rob Van Dam’s “R-V-D” thumb point. Standard wrestling gesture, “I want the belt” (hands across the waist),  became pop-culturally the Discount Double Check.

But football players aren’t the only ones looking to publicly pay homage to pro wrestling. Announcers and Commentators are showing respect too. Adam Lefkoe of WHAS11 in Louisville, Kentucky transformed his Sportscast into Wrestlecast! Wrestlecast was supposed to be a recap of high school football highlights. And, in a way, it is. But in a better way, it’s about how many pro wrestling names and references Adam can fit into one segment… while talking about football.

How many references did you catch? The official total is 31 out of a Twitter crowd-sourced 50 names (Just like the WWE, Lefkoe is social media savvy: he explains the reasons behind Wrestlecast on his Tumblr page). All Adam was missing during his ‘promo’ was a Discount Double Check reference! Actually Scratch that, Adam does one better: he proudly displays a Vintage WCW Championship Belt (replica) complete with ‘nWo’ spraypainted on it! The Gauntlet has been thrown down: Adam Lefkoe just put every wrestling fan – be they football player, football commentator or sportscaster on notice!

The IWC: Ramon Villalobos

MB wants to Highlight The IWC; No Not that IWC. The Illustrated Wrestling Community

Ramon Villalobos is no stranger here at ThreeManBooth. Some say he might even be the 3rd Man (3rd Man: No, he’s not.). But we are fans of his art, depicting Batman and Bane, CM Punk or virtual fighters – not to be confused with Virtua Fighter – Zangief and El Jefe. Each time we discuss doing a spotlight on him in the 3ManBooth offices, he comes up with something completely new. I could go on and on about this depiction of El Generico, the independent Wrestler that still gets cheers of “Ole!” in Ring of Honor, despite no longer being a part of that organization.

Who Wouldn’t Want a Poster of This?

How cool does that look? It captures both the joy and the intensity that El Generico brought to his matches. Ramon can also add wrestling to non-wrestling situations and have it make complete sense. He has a running series, Man of 1000 Holds, where he depicts fictional characters performing wrestling holds. Ramon captured Daenerys Targaryen, from HBO’s Game of Thrones,  performing a Dragon Sleeper. If the Mother of Dragons defeated all her rivals with the Dragon Sleeper, we’d not only watch the show but we’d read the books. Winter may be coming but it’s tapping out!

In another piece, Ramon has Wonder Woman apply a single leg Boston Crab to fellow demi-god Hercules. Wonder Woman even takes the hold to to Liontamer levels, arching the leg and placing her foot on the back of Herc’s head for added effect. To defeat the son of Zeus, the Daughter of Hippolyte needs a little ruthless aggression.

If it wasn’t clear that, from the work above, Ramon was a talented artist and wrestling fan, then maybe his Instagram account holds the true spark. There, Ramon posts warm-up sketches based on the whatever he’s watching at the time. While were tweeting our excitement during CM Punk versus Brock Lesnar or holding our breath during Daniel Bryan versus John Cena at SummerSlam, Ramon was sketching signature moments from each match.

Ramon perfectly captured the aggression that CM Punk and Brock Lesnar unfurled at each other, whether they were strikes or submissions. The move that ended John Cena’s WWE title reign, Daniel Bryan’s driving flying knee, is not only perfectly depicted but also perfectly captures that swift and powerful change in the guard of the WWE. Again, these are only sketches; that means that all his pieces come from a place of pure passion.

Follow Ramon Villalobos on Twitter, Tumblr for his future projects and wrestling comments. Also, you can support him by buying some of his designs on his Society6 page.

So That Happened: 09/02/13

RAW kicks off with Triple H in the middle of the ring.

Triple H introduces to us (again) the face of the company and the WWE Champion, “The Viper” Randy Orton.

Randy Orton says that as the face of the WWE, protecting this company is his number one priority and he cannot, nor will he, let the image of this company be tarnished. Orton says if you disrespect him, you’re disrespecting the entire WWE and you need to be dealt with. Randy Orton brings up Daniel Bryan destroying his Escalade then shows the footage of what he and The Shield did to Daniel Bryan as an example.

Randy Orton says that he’d like to take a page out of Daniel Bryan’s book and play a game with us. A question and answer/audience participation game that the WWE Universe would love. Orton asks the WWE Universe if Daniel Bryan should face him for the WWE Title. After a “YES!” Chant, Randy Orton responds “NO.” Orton asks if Daniel Bryan has the slightest chance of beating him at Night Of Champions, after a “YES” Chant, Orton responds “NO.” Orton asks if Daniel Bryan will amount to anything in the WWE or will he always be a B+ Player. After the crowd chants “NO” for B+ Orton asks if Daniel Bryan should give up his opportunity to face him for the WWE Championship. Orton screams “YES!” as the crowd screams “NO!”

Triple H says as COO of the WWE he has a few responsibilities and one of his biggest responsibilities is making sure the WWE puts out the best product each and every week. Triple H says that the WWE Universe has the most passionate fans in the world and they deserve the best. His other job, is to ensure the health and wellbeing of the WWE Superstars and Divas and recently, he’s started to worry about Daniel Bryan’s health. Triple H thinks Daniel Bryan’s ego is getting in the way of his health.

Triple H says the WWE Universe isn’t helping Daniel Bryan’s situation. Triple H blames the WWE Universe for chanting “YES!” and causing Daniel Bryan to confuse popularity for what is best for business. Triple H thinks Popularity has nothing to do with what’s best for business.

Triple H gives an example of this theory by using Doink The Clown. Triple H says Doink The Clown was insanely, wildly popular, but there was a very big reason that Doink The Clown wasn’t WWE Champion: It would’ve been bad for business.

Triple H says that Daniel Bryan will never be WWE Champion, but that’s okay. Triple H says that he’ll bring back the Crusierweight or European Titles for Daniel Bryan to compete for. Triple H and Randy Orton are interrupted by Daniel Bryan.

Daniel Bryan says that Triple H and Randy Orton made a lot of “good points” and that he’s thrilled to be compared to Doink The Clown, but he’s not sure there was never a loud Doink The Clown chant in 1992. Bryan thinks the only clowns he sees are the ones standing in the ring right now. Bryan understands that Triple H and Randy Orton want him to give up the WWE Championship Match because Triple H gave up his beliefs to become a Corporate Sellout, while Randy Orton gave up being in the WWE Title picture until someone decided to hand it to him.

Daniel Bryan asks the WWE Universe if he should give up his WWE Championship Match and the crowd chants “NO!” Bryan says he thinks the answer to that question is the same as the question, “Is Randy Orton more masculine than Stephanie McMahon.” Daniel Bryan leads a “NO” chant while Triple H and Randy Orton get upset.

Randy Orton thinks there’s no chance in hell that Daniel Bryan can win this fight, but Bryan thinks Orton doesn’t understand because Randy Orton has never been told that he can’t do something. Bryan says he’s been told his entire career the things he can’t do. Bryan says all the things people told him he couldn’t do made him the man he is today and made him know that he can do those things. Bryan says he loved the fight and scraping and crawling to get here while Randy Orton was given everything.

Daniel Bryan says he doesn’t think he can beat Randy Orton for the WWE Championship, he KNOWS he can beat Randy Orton for the WWE Championship. Bryan thinks Triple H knows this too otherwise they wouldn’t beat him down or put him in handicap matches. Bryan says they know what the WWE Universe knows. Randy Orton may have the genetics like a WWE Champion, but he’s doesn’t have the heart of a champion. Bryan is about to call Randy Orton Triple H’s little bitch, but Triple H cuts him off.

Triple H asks Daniel Bryan why he’s so angry and compares him to a “little grumpy old troll.” Triple H tells Bryan that his anger is misdirected and that he should be angry at Big Show, the man with an Iron Clad Contract, who stands by and cries as Daniel Bryan gets beaten on week after week.

Triple H says he’s going to let Daniel Bryan take his anger out on the Big Show tonight because tonight’s Main Event will be Daniel Bryan vs. The Big Show.

Backstage: Triple H and Randy Orton are talking and making fun of Big Show and Daniel Bryan. As they’re talking, they run into Cody Rhodes. Cody Rhodes shakes Triple H’s hand as Triple H asks about Cody’s father.

Cody tells Triple H and Randy Orton that he thinks tonight’s Main Event will be great as long as no one gets involved. Triple H asks Cody Rhodes why anyone would get involved and Cody turns his attention to Randy Orton. Cody asks Orton why he would avoid a title match against Daniel Bryan? Cody says with all due respect, Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton is what’s Best For Business

Triple H takes offense to this and tells Cody Rhodes that he’s the one who decides what’s best for business and he thinks Daniel Bryan vs. Big Show is what’s best for business. Triple H claims Cody has a lot on his mind because he has a wedding coming up, then calls Cody out for not inviting him and Orton to the wedding. Triple H says that despite not being invited, he’s got Cody Rhodes a wedding present: A one-on-one match with Randy Orton. Cody thanks Triple H for the massive opportunity, but Triple H tells him that it’s a massive opportunity for Cody Rhodes to keep his employment. Triple H tells Cody Rhodes that if he doesn’t win, he knows Cody won’t be here for very long.

Match 01: Fandango vs. The Miz

The Miz starts stomping the mat, then he runs and boots Fandango in the nose.

Fandango’s nose is broken.

The Miz locks Fandango in the Figure-Four Leg Lock.

Winner: The Miz

Backstage: Booker T wants to talk with Daniel Bryan, but Bryan says he’s got a lot going on right now. Booker T says he needs to talk to Bryan. Booker T knows Daniel Bryan wants to rage against the machine, but thinks he shouldn’t do that. Booker T says Bryan is too good to go back to wrestling in gyms and thinks Daniel Bryan could have a great career and make a ton of money in the WWE. Booker T recommends that Bryan gives up his title shot.

Daniel Bryan tells Booker T, “Tell Me. You did NOT just say that.” Bryan says this isn’t about money or the title, it’s about his life. Booker T tells Daniel Bryan to wake up and that these people can hurt him real bad and ruin his life by ending his career. Booker T says that the Corporations powers travel way beyond this arena. Booker T says that he supports Daniel Bryan, but he needs to tread lightly.

Match 02: Dolph Ziggler vs. ???

Dean Ambrose attacks Dolph Ziggler from behind.

Afterwards, Ryback comes out.

Stephanie McMahon says this won’t be a private conversation then walks off.

Stephanie McMahon Calls Out The Big Show:

Stephanie McMahon introduces someone who helped her out a lot when she was younger, someone who helped teach her life lessons along the way, her friend, her giant, the World’s Largest Athlete, The Big Show.

Stephanie McMahon hugs Big Show then brings up that he doesn’t want to face Daniel Bryan tonight. Stephanie tells Big Show that he taught her a long time ago that it’s okay to do things you don’t want to do, as long as you’re willing to pay the price. Stephanie McMahon reveals that Big Show is flat broke and has nothing right now. Stephanie McMahon tells Big Show that his Iron Clad Contract is void if he doesn’t do what he’s told in the WWE.

Stephanie McMahon thinks Big Show’s time is running out in the WWE and he doesn’t have many alternatives left. Stephanie says there aren’t many 7ft. 500lb leading men in Hollywood and jokes about Big Show being the World’s Largest Gas Station Attendant. Stephanie tells Big Show to think about his family and that he’s giving all of this up just because he won’t compete in a match. Stephanie decides to take it further and tells Big Show that Giants, medically don’t live as long as regular people.

Stephanie McMahon tells Big Show that he will perform his duties and face Daniel Bryan tonight. Stephanie apologizes to Show because he’s hurt and claims that the only person that’s hurting more than him right now is her. Stephanie McMahon hugs Big Show then walks off.

Paul Heyman tells Brad Maddox that is CM Punk actually got his hands on him, you would never see Paul Heyman again.

Paul Heyman tells Brad Maddox that at Night Of Champions, it’s a guarantee that CM Punk will get his hands on him and that he’s going to get a beating from the hands of CM Punk. Heyman asks Maddox if the match is what’s Best For Business. Right on cue, Triple H walks up.

Triple H tells Paul Heyman that he approved the match. Heyman asks Triple H why he would do such a thing. Triple H tells him that it’s not a personal thing and that he is a huge fan of how Paul Heyman can weasel his way out of situations. Triple H says this match guarantees that Heyman can’t weasel his way out. Triple H thinks Paul Heyman might pull off the impossible and weasel his way out of it. Or it guarantees that CM Punk will give him the beating of his life. Triple H says either way, he wins and that’s what’s Best For Business.

CM Punk walks out with a Kendo Stick.

CM Punk says “I Promise” are two words that don’t mean a lot, but they still mean a lot to him. Punk says he’s never promised anything to anyone in this company or to the WWE Universe, but he promises no more empty threats, posturing or talking, because he’s having a hard time coming up with what he’s supposed to say next. CM Punk talks about what was done to him last week by the hands of the Kendo Stick.

CM Punk says that what’s left to say, and he’s dressed to compete, but wrestling is the furthest thing from his mind right now. After what was done to him last week, he wants to fight and he wants to fight Paul Heyman. CM Punk says that if he has to go through Curtis Axel to get to Paul Heyman, he’ll do it and he’ll do it now, but he knows they won’t come out. Punk claims he’s in such a dark place that he wouldn’t want to fight himself right now, but knows he gets the chance to face Heyman and Axel in 13 Days at Night Of Champions.

CM Punk says he’s not out here to convince anyone of the “Biblical Ass Beating” that’s going to go on at Night Of Champions, he’s here to say something to the WWE Universe, everyone in the front row, cheap seats, to his friends and family in Chicago, all the men and women wearing his t-shirt and every little kid who made a sign to support him. Punk says in 13 days, he’s guarantees he’s going to get past Curtis Axel and get his hands on Paul Heyman.

CM Punk says if you order Night Of Champions, you’re gonna see a side of CM Punk you’ve never seen before and he’s not sure if it’s a side of CM Punk you’re going to like. Punk says he can live with it, but there are going to be a lot of people uncomfortable with what happens to Heyman at Night Of Champions.
