3. Cheap Pop: Candice LeRae versus Athena
2014 was a very good year for women’s wrestling. Some of the best matches we saw involved women wrestlers from all promotions. Gail Kim and Angelina Love had a Hardcore match that had the TNA fans on their feet.
And this is before Havok debuted to dominate the Division. The bar for the Knockouts has been raised for 2015. And let’s face it: whether you like Total Divas or not, the WWE showcased both story-driven and sport-driven Divas matches. The Bella Twins incorporated their personal relationships – Brie to husband Daniel Bryan, Nikki to her sister Brie – as a build-up to Brie Bella versus Stephanie McMahon in one of the most anticipated matches at SummerSlam. Paige made her debut on the main roster and earned earning the Divas title on her first night.
It showed us what had been going on at Full Sail: the NXT Divas are all about competition. While Paige was taking on every main roster challenger on the main roster, Charlotte, Bayley, Sasha Banks, Natalya and others were battling to steal the show each night on NXT.
That being said, the best women’s match we saw all year took place Wrestlemania Weekend at SHIMMER 62. Athena took on Candice LeRae in, hands down, the best non-Daniel Bryan match of that weekend. Check out this match here.
Candice LeRae was making a name for herself on the West Coast, mainly in promotions like PWG. Athena was returning from a serious shoulder injury. The popularity and respect for these women made this match hotly anticipated. And this is Candice’s SHIMMER debut!
Actually, all of SHIMMER 62 whole show was good. Leva Bates, the Queen of Wrestling Cosplay dressed as Gambit in honor of the Cajun location.
We sang the X-men theme in her honor. It was awesome. Check out the entire show and future SHIMMER shows when you can. You’re guaranteed to see some great wrestling.
Daniel Bryan Addresses The WWE Universe:
Daniel Bryan says it’s an honor to be here for the last RAW of 2014, but it’s always an honor to be in this ring. Bryan thanks the WWE Universe for giving him the opportunity to Main Event Wrestlemania 30 and beat Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista in one night to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. After a “YES” chant, Bryan says he can never repay them for them.
Daniel Bryan says 5 days after Wrestlemania, he married the woman of his dreams and it was the greatest week of his life. Bryan reveals that 2 days after his honeymoon, his Dad died, which he wasn’t there for because he was wrestling. Bryan brings up his career and life-altering surgery, saying the doctors couldn’t fix him. Bryan says all he wanted to do was be in the ring because being in the ring was the only thing that took the pain away.
Daniel Bryan says he doesn’t think there is anybody who cheered louder when Dolph Ziggler pinned Seth Rollins at Survivor Series and sent The Authority out of power. Bryan calls the moment great, but says it hurt because he couldn’t be there for it.
Daniel Bryan says he talked to his friends, family and Edge about career-threatening life altering injuries. Bryan tells the WWE Universe that you get to a point where you have to make a decision whether all of this is worth it or not. Bryan tells the WWE Universe that because they supported him his entire career, he made a special request to make this announcement in front of them. Daniel Bryan asks if his career is over and is met with aloud “NO” chants.
Daniel Bryan says “NO.”
Daniel Bryan says that is not the announcement he is here to make. Bryan says he is ready to fight, and compete, then asks if he will be in the 2015 Royal Rumble. Bryan leads the WWE Universe in loud “YES” Chants.”

Backstage: Edge and Christian are playing kazoos until they are interrupted by The Miz and Damien Mizdow. Miz gets upset, but Christian starts playing Miz’s music as Edge raps along. Miz says he should set him up with his agent. Christian responds he should set him with a tic tac. Miz sees an Edge puppet and asks what is that. Edge says that’s his stunt double.
The Miz demands a rematch of the tag team titles tonight against The Usos. Edge gives him a match, but not against The Usos and says it’s next. Damien Mizdow eyes the Edge Stunt Double.

Backstage: Seth Rollins confirms his invitation to John Cena on the Cutting Edge Peep Show tonight. Rollins says he’s feeling so good that he might extend another invitation to Brock Lesnar.

Ziggler wasn’t the only one in the giving mood at the show. Alicia Fox and Emma gave out WWE Holiday T-Shirts before teaming up to take on the Bella Twins, Brie and the Divas Champion, Nikki.
The Bellas were in a giving mood too. Instead of giving out t-shirts, Brie decided to give out #KNEEMODE to Emma. And, in the spirit of the Dolph Ziggler, she did it twice!
But Paige was the Diva that gave the most. As the Special Guest Referee, she reminded the Bellas that the ring was HER HOUSE! And when Nikki didn’t follow Paige’s rules, Paige counted Nikki down for the 1-2-3, giving Alicia and Emma the win! Listen, some might say it was a fast count but do you want to argue with Paige? IN HER HOUSE?!?!
