Highlight Reel: Come on-a My House

In Highlight Reel, 3MB will look at funny and interesting wrestling videos

Every now and again, we’re reminded that things we learned through wrestling may not be the actual way things are. There is a commercial that uses a very catchy song, a rendition of “Come on-a My House” made famous by Rosemary Clooney. The commercial is for cat food but when it comes to wrestling, you never know what will trigger your memory. When I try to sing along with the commercial though, I learned I don’t know any of the words. The song goes:

Come on-a my house my house, I´m gonna give you candy
Come on-a my house, my house, I´m gonna give a you
Apple a plum and apricot-a too, eh

but those aren’t the words I know. The lyrics I know are:

Come on-a my house my house, I´m gonna give you candy
Come on-a my house, my house, I´m gonna give a you
Slams and hits and whacks and kicks, eh

Where did I learn these weird lyrics? Well, the WWE, of course!
In 1996, the then-WWF used “Come on-a My House” in a commercial for In Your House: the videogame, customizing the lyrics to fit the nature of the videogame.

Named after the Pay Per View Series, this game was the WWF’s follow up to Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game, which took after the Mortal Kombat franchise. Stylistically, it used the same digitized sprites to capture realistic motions of the Wrestlers /  Fighters. and while In Your House does not have Fatalities (PG or no PG, that is a bad idea for Wrestling), it does have special endings that different wrestlers could do that were unique to their personas. It also, weirdly, called back to the Wrestlemania videogame for the NES: Wrestling themed icons would randomly appear in the ring and wrestlers had specialized moves. Triple H – then Hunter Hearst Hemsley – attacked his opponents with a croquet mallet, signifying his Greenwich blue blood gimmick. But there was not an apple, plum or apricot to be found anywhere.

The  WWF has a funny way of touching different corners of the pop culture landscape, like with this “Come on-a My House” song. But, they always put a certain wrestling spin on it, which accidentally or intentionally skews things. I wouldn’t be surprised if the WWE released those In Your House games at a later date. Of course, Hunter Hearst Helmsley’s croquet mallet will probably be redrawn as Triple H’s sledgehammer but so be it.

Cheap Pop: Happy Draft Day!

In Cheap Pop, Three Man Booth discusses random topics
with a slight historical bend.

Today is the official start of the NFL Draft. If you’re a football fan, this is one of the biggest days of the year. If you’re not a football fan, all you hear is “blahblahblah. Sports.” Don’t worry, non-football fans. Three Man Booth is here for you. No, we’re not doing a draft of our own, but we thought it would be fun to spotlight some of our favorite WWE Draft and Draft Fall-Out Memories and share them with you. Fun, right? Let’s get started!

WWE Draft Moments:

(All Photos Courtesy of WWE.com)
A newly drafted CM Punk cashes in

Keep It Five Star: I know CM Punk cashing in was a huge moment for many wrestling fans, but this moment holds a special place in my heart. I remember it like it was yesterday. Edge just rushed off Jim Ross and claimed he would take the World Heavyweight Championship to Smackdown, leaving RAW with no championship. Batista attacks Edge then as Batista walks up the ramp, this music plays! CM Punk cashes in, hits the GTS on Edge, gets the 3 count and becomes the NEWWWW World Heavyweight Champion! I was standing on my bed cheering and screaming. I went to go call and text my friends…

AND NO ONE WAS HOME! None of my friends were watching in real time due to other commitments. It was disappointing. But throughout the night, I received calls and texts and celebrated with the other future booth members when they were finally able to see it. Not only was this moment great, but it also ushered in my favorite post-Attitude Era period of RAW where the “Inmates Ran The Asylum.” That post is for another day.

Big Show defects from RAW to ECW

LeKeith: We are not biggest fan of the Big Show. I mean, we include a #BigShowRuinsThings tag in our RAW Recaps when he’s on. Because it’s true! He has a tendency to ruin things. Unfortunately, these moments overshadow when he does something that’s genuinely cool. Take, for example, the WWE vs. ECW Head to Head Special. There was a 20-man Battle Royal pitting some WWE Superstars versus ECW wrestlings. The final 3 came down to Kurt Angle (ECW), Randy Orton (RAW) and The Big Show (RAW). Orton eliminated Angle and to win the rights to the Apex Slam and give RAW the victory… or so everyone thought. Big Show ripped off his RAW shirt to reveal an ECW shirt, chokeslammed Randy Orton, and won the Battle Royale for ECW. Big Show shocked everyone by not only wrestling in two shirts but also by pulling off the World’s Largest Defection.

John Cena gets drafted to RAW and immediately confronted

Three Man Booth: The fallout from a Draft pick can be bigger than the pick itself. For weeks, Christian was idling on Monday Night RAW; instead of sitting in the back, he climb in the middle of the ring and, week after week, unleash verbal tirades about how Captain Charisma was better than everyone. He particularly focused on John Cena, who was on the Smackdown brand. Per “Brand Rules,” these two wrestlers could not interact. On top of that, Cena never responded to Christian’s raps (no, seriously, Christian has a sick flow), further raising the ire of Christian and his Peeps.

Then at the 2005 Draft, it finally happened: John Cena was introduced as the first RAW Draft Pick on Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel. Cena did not even have time to show off his Throwback jersey before Christian’s theme music hit and the crowd – full of Christians Peeps – erupted! Finally, Christian and Cena were going to face off, on the mic and in the ring! Sadly, their feud was short-lived. After a few glancing interactions in tag matches on RAW, Christian had been moved to Smackdown in the longest Draft in WWE history.

One pick for each of us just wasn’t enough. Here are three more favorite draft moments of ours!

Supplemental Draft:

Carlito gets drafted to RAW and makes history

Keep It Five Star: It’s not secret that I am a huge fan of Carlito. In 2004, Carlito’s Razor Ramon-esque promos got me intrigued. Then in October of 2004, Carlito beating John Cena for the United States Championship in his first night made me a fan for life. Fast Forward to 2005. Shelton Benjamin is questioning Eric Bischoff about facing RAW’s newest Draft Pick for the Intercontinental Title when suddenly, you hear that familiar spit and catchphrase. Not only does Carlito get drafted to RAW, but he also goes on to make history by defeating Shelton Benjamin for the Intercontinental Title on his FIRST Night! John Cena flashbacks, anyone?  On top of that, Carlito made his RAW debut even more memorable by spitting in the face of a Diva he didn’t find cool. The future was bright for this young Superstar, and if you’re as familiar with Carlito’s WWE career as I am… Let’s just end this post right here.

A newly drafted Shelton Benjamin faces Triple H

LeKeith: Some Superstars see the Draft as a chance to start over on a different brand, in a different atmosphere. Other Superstars dread it, seeing a switch from RAW to Smackdown as being demoted or placed on the B team. Triple H had the latter mindset in 2004. He was drafted to Smackdown and spent the week doing everything in his power to be back on RAW by the next Monday. He succeeded; taking advantage of Teddy long’s love of Tag Teams, Triple H was traded back to RAW for the mutli-time tag team champions The Dudley Boyz and tag team specialist Booker T. 3 for the price of 1! What a move by the Cerebral Assassin! His celebration was cut short though; The Game faced Shelton Benjamin, debuting on RAW via the Draft, and was upset by the Gold Standard. Not even the Cerebral Assassin can dodge the Draft!

The Miz gets drafted to RAW then turns on John Morrison

Three Man Booth: Fans of The Miz and John Morrison call this moment, “The Day The Dirt Sheet Died.”  … Okay. Nobody calls it that, but in the 2009 WWE Draft, RAW’s Kofi Kingston faced ECW’s The Miz and the winner got a Draft Pick for their respective team. Spoiler Alert: Kofi wins, but it’s what happens after Kofi’s victory that’s important. RAW gets the draft pick and it’s none other than The Miz! The team of The Miz and John Morrison were officially split up. It seemed as if the two would take a page from The Dudley Boyz and split amicably, but that’s not what happened.

After the split, The Miz, determined to prove that he would not be “The Jannetty” of the group, took a page from Christian and Chris Jericho, and challenged the biggest Non-Undertaker dog in the yard, John Cena. It didn’t work out for him and everyone thought Miz was heading right down Jabroni Drive, but of course, that’s not what happened. As for John Morrison, he’s currently wrestling elsewhere and selling fitness DVDs. But maybe one day, we will see a reunion of “The (Self-Proclaimed) Greatest Tag Team Of The 21st Century.”

Kane tells Bryan that he doesn’t have to worry about The Brothers Of Destruction, but Bryan “corrects him” by saying it’s Team Hell No and The Undertaker.

Daniel Bryan says he’s worried because no one has defeated The Shield then asks Kane to give The Undertaker a call. Kane says The Undertaker doesn’t carry a cellphone. Bryan sees that The Undertaker needs to be here because he came up with a great gameplan for the match. Bryan tries to explain, but Kane stops him and tells him that The Undertaker does not take orders. Bryan says he his diagrams then asks Kane what’s wrong with him tonight. Bryan thinks Kane’s upset because they haven’t hugged in a while and offers a hug. Kane yells at Bryan telling him NOT to show The Undertaker diagrams. Kane tells Bryan that no matter what, do NOT try and hug The Undertaker. Bryan promises not to hug The Undertaker.

Daniel Bryan and Kane get attacked by The Shield!

Ryback comes down to the ring in his Ryback Beanie and Ryback Shirt.

Ryback asks Mick Foley if he thinks John Cena giving him a chair will help him out. Foley says when Cena first gave him this chair, he felt offended because he’s Mick Foley, The Hardcore Legend. Foley says in his day, he took on the biggest, the baddest the best, and that he always found a way to get back up even when there was a tooth stuck up his nose and his ear was ripped off. Foley says that he knows that his day came and lef a long time ago so if Ryback decides to hurt him, he’ll go down and he might not get back up. Foley tells regardless, he has things to say and he’s asks Ryback to listen to him and take a look at the footage of Ryback and John Cena from last week.

Mick Foley asks Ryback if he has any idea how many times Mick Foley was attacked with no one to help him. Foley says he has no idea because he didn’t count them. Ryback runs down Mick Foley’s appearance and mentions the chair he has then asks Foley one more time how the chair helps him in this situation. Happy Birthday to the BLOG!

It’s hard to believe that it’s only been a year since threemanbooth.com launched. When we started, the goal was to take CM Punk’s illustrious words and make Wrestling fun again. The past year taught us that wrestling can only be as fun if you make it fun. There are certainly a lot of things that do that.

We chose 3 posts from the past year that showed off our ThreeManBooth-iness:

KeepItFiveStar: Fantasy GM AJ
Besides the weekly RAW Recap, this meme is one of my favorites on the site. Fantasy GM AJ started in our “I Have Til 5” post about AJ Lee making nerdy matches as General Manager. I loved the post so much that I took it one step further and turned it into a Meme. 31 pictures later,  it is still one of our most popular Memes. Call me a delusional fanboy, but I like to think that AJ’s seen at least one of those photos. AJ, if you ever come across any of the things we’ve done about you here at Three Man Booth, I’d like to say: Thanks for the inspiration, and are you free for dinner sometime next week?

LeKeith: Al Bundy Saved Wrestling
Celebrities being involvement in professional wrestling is always talked about … and always hated. But personally, if not for Ed O’Neil aka Al Bundy from Married With Children, I probably would have chosen Perfect Strangers over Saturday Night’s Main Event on that night in 1992. Then this site would be ThreeManStrangers instead, which does not sound like the wings of my dreams.

ThreeManBooth: Cover of HBK’s “Sexy Boy”
Even the best wrestling theme songs are kind of bad, on the grand spectrum of music. You’ll never mistake something like Zack Ryder’s “Oh, Radio” for a long lost Beatles track. When someone musically talented like John Clinebell takes Shawn Michaels’ “Sexy Boy” and makes it sound like a rendition you would hear from a contestant on The Voice, that should be celebrated.

But we found that we have the most fun when tweeting about wrestling (be it Pay Per Views, iMPACT and especially Monday Night RAW) with everyone. And for that, Thank You. Please have a digital piece of cake with us although cake and wrestling usually don’t go well together.
