In Highlight Reel, 3MB will check out funny and interesting wrestling videos.
Today is the 30th anniversary of the release of Super Mario Brothers in Japan. To celebrate the accomplishments of our favorite mustachioed hero, we looked at Mario’s connections to the world of wrestling. After lamenting the cancelled Super Mario Strikers, a game that was supposed to be a combination of volleyball and wrestling (hey, it should’ve worked!), we found our favorite connection: WWE Hall of Famer Captain Lou Albano!
In addition to playing Cyndi Lauper’s father in the “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” music video, Captain Lou was also tapped to play the role of Mario in the Super Mario Brothers Super Show! He played Mario in the live action moments of the show and he was the voice of Mario in the cartoon moments of the show.
But that’s not all…
Captain Lou was also integral in creating the first ever videogame dance. While the world was introduced to “Pac-Man Fever” in 1981, there’s was no dance that went along with it: that would just be eating. No, Captain Lou made “Do The Mario” more popular than it should of been.
It’s Albano’s big personality that makes “Swing your arms from side to side” get stuck in your head until you’ve done the Mario, just like that!
Happy Anniversary, Super Mario Bros!
