As a part of popular culture, the WWE doesn’t really need to reference other popular culture moments. When they do happen, however, they tend to be memorable, like when CM Punk and Daniel Bryan recalled the Sonnen / Silva UFC fight or when Vickie Guerrero “eastwooded” during her anti-AJ rant.

But sometimes pop culture comes to the WWE. Like the time Vince McMahon got rickroll’d on live television during the Million Dollar Raw Giveaway. The premise was that Vince would call members of the WWE Universe and ask them for “the phrase that pays,” and the correct answer would win the dollar amount – chosen at random – for that call time.
The user had CallerTunes, which allowed a song to play while the caller waited. Whether the participant had Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” as a callertune before signing up for the Giveaway is unknown; either he was a jerk who Rickroll’d everyone he knew or he chose this moment to make his indelible mark in wrestling. Either way, he was successful, 200,000 dollars richer and couldn’t have anticipated the awkward hilarity that comes from baffling Vince McMahon.
