3 Count: Theme Madness

In 3 Count, Three Man Booth will Discuss Wrestling & Wrestling Related Music:
The Good, The Bad & The Cheesy

The Road to Wrestlemania always overlaps with another popular sporting event: NCAA March Madness (not to be confused with Macho Madness). Our basketball knowledge is limited to the few times when the two sports overlapped: Dennis Rodman wrestling Karl Malone, Shaq as a Hulkamaniac, Shaq and the Big Show having a Staredown on RAW, Sugar Dunkerton … but the biggest thing about March Madness always seems to be the strategy used in filling out the 64 Team Bracket. So, we tried to come up with a way to bring this to Wrestling.

Last month we contacted our regional chapter of ThreeManBoothers to get volunteers for the inaugural 3MB Theme Madness Tournament.

Here are the rules for the theme selection: basically, we wanted to avoid the inevitable face-off  between the “classic themes” (Hogan, Savage, Flair) and … well, Stone Cold Steve Austin. So we limited eligible themes to only ones heard in the past 14 months. That meant that a lot of current promotions’ rosters were eligible. It also meant that recently retired wrestlers like Edge or recurring semi-retired wrestlers like Mick Foley or even one-off Superstars like Doink the Clown were eligible via creative use of the loophole. The strongest use of this is probably the inclusion of “The Kings of Wrestling” theme: Chris Hero used it in January 2012 before becoming Kassius Ohno. #StillCounts!

We didn’t want to limit theme selections to the Big 3 Big 2 WWE,  but wanted to balance out their inclusion. So, we had each participant list their 10 favorite themes from 2012 to 2013 and rank them (1st place gets 10 points, 10th place gets 1 point). That way, indie themes could be given more points for support. Plus, a good theme is a good theme, no matter the promotion. There’s a reason why both Kevin Steen and El Generico broke the Top 10. This also helped good themes in the WWE that have been saddled with less than stellar Superstars. It’s not the fault of “Say It To My Face” that Alex Riley isn’t over. The theme does its job.

After tallying the results, we ranked the entries from 1 to 64 and entered them in this March Madness style bracket.

Don’t Strain Your Eyes! A Larger Version Can Be Found Here
Seriously, Don’t Strain ‘Em! This One’s Here Too

The numbers on the left is each theme’s ranking. The numbers on the right are the points they were awarded. Any theme that has (—) next to it means that it was added after the fact by the ThreeManBooth Executive Committee get 64 entries. The Undertaker was a glaring omission, as was Bobby Roode. For the final two spots were actually determined in the fairest way possible. We let Ted Dibiase Jr., JBL, The Great Khali and 3MB (No, not us) face off in WWE ’13. JBL Back Suplexed The Great Khali onto the ring steps! That’s how bad he wanted this!

And while we’re very happy with the songs that made the cut, there is one Honorable Mention we would like to address. “Short Term Memory” Emma’s Theme in NXT. Seriously, listen to this:

Before you know it, you’ll be doing this:

Courtesy of coreygraves

Like we said, it almost made the cut. Don’t worry, Emma; you’re definitely a top seed in our “Dancing Wrestlers” Tournament.

Right now, these brackets are in the hands of the 3MB Express. They’re in the midst of filing out their brackets and then we’ll announce the round by round. Even if you weren’t chosen, you can still participate! Leave your comments below on who should advance or Tweet using #3MBBracket!  Think Yoshi Tatsu should be the Cinderella story of this Tournament? Tweet It! Who would prevail in the fantasy warfare between Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana and William “Royalty” Regal?  Comment! Who knows, your thoughts could influence the Tournament and earn you a seat in the next 3MB Tournament (we’re serious about that Dance-Off).

Cena says he won’t predict victory, but he is focused and ready for Wrestlemania.

John Cena is interrupted by the Prime Time Players. Titus O’Neil comes out in a wig and a jumpsuit…

The Prime Time Players say they are also ready for Wrestlemania 29, then introduce O’Neil’s new character, Rufus “Pancake” Patterson, Titus O’Neil’s Uncle. They call him pancake because he “flattens fools.” John Cena makes pancake jokes, sucks up to Pittsburgh by naming the Steelers and Penguins, then says he can get them some medication.

“Pancake Patterson” says the only medication the WWE Universe needs is the Prime Time Players. Darren Young says the PTP put the E in WWE Entertainment. John Cena calls Young out on the extra E, but the Prime Time Players do the “Millions Of Dollars” dance until Patterson’s gout acts up. I’m not making this up.

John Cena says the Prime Time Players timing is off and says he hopes he’ll see them at Wrestlemania. Pancake Patterson says they don’t want to see Cena at Wrestlemania. They want to see The Prime Time Players. Patterson brings up the comparisons between John Cena and Darren Young, and thinks Darren Young should be on the cover of Cocoa Pebbles since John Cena is on the cover of Fruity Pebbles. Highlight Reel: Stone Cold St. Patrick

In Highlight Reel, 3MB will check out funny and interesting wrestling videos.

We already knew VH1’s Jim Shearer was something of a wrestling fan when he would invoke a Y2J-ism to introduce Taylor Swift’s “Never Ever Getting Back Together” during the Top 20 Countdown. But we weren’t sure how deep his fandom ran. However, on a roundtable discussion on Big Morning Buzz Live with Carrie Keagan, each panelist was asked who they would most like to have a drink with, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the drinking-est day of the year. When Shearer was asked, he chose none other than STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN, which caused every wrestling fan listening to raise their arms in a victory salute!

We approve of your choice, Jim. That’s our first choice of Wrestler / Drinker (living) as well. However, since Jim Shearer is a non-drinker, something we respect here at ThreeManBooth, may we offer up two alternatives: You could share a 6 pack of Pepsi with the Straight Edge Superstar CM Punk. Or, you could have a spinach and mint shake with the Wrestling Vegan, Daniel Bryan (We’ve had this and it’s delicious).

Cheers For Everyone on St. Patrick’s Day!
Give Me A Hell Yeah!

Stone Cold wants Jim Shearer to be his number one drinking buddy too!

Snapshots: It’s All About The Game

In Snapshots, Three Man Booth searches for images to share.

When THQ announced its bankruptcy in 2013, there was a lot of concern over the fate of the WWE’s videogame franchise, which was particularly interesting since I thought everyone hated WWE ’13 (Attitude Era aside). But the worry toward WWE ’13 more than likely stemmed from the fear that there would not be a wrestling game this year, or worse, another full year with WWE ’13. But consider the first fear assuaged: Take Two Interactive, with their popular 2K Sports Series, has picked up the WWE videogame rights. But long before Yuke’s started motion capping wrestlers, the Superstars of the WWE and WCW competed in sprite action.

The appreciation for the history of wrestling in videogames is on display at PaletteSwap. We first came across this site after discovering the alternate covers for Street Fighter IV and Pro Wrestling. For this month, possibly to coincide with the Road to Wrestlemania, PaletteSwap is dedicating it time to classic Wrestling videogames. Rusty Shackles started the tribute by re-imagining the cover to WWF Wrestlemania for the NES, the first wrestling videogame created by the WWF for home systems.

Swapping Hulk Hogan for Macho Man Randy Savage makes perfect sense to me. He was the best wrestler (out of 6) to pick in the game. Well second best. If you could master Bam Bam Bigelow’s running cartwheel attack, then the game was yours for the taking. That is my lasting memory of the game. That and the tiny gummy candy looking icons that would scroll across the top of the screen to assist you during the matchups: The Honky Tonk Man, naturally, had a guitar while Andre the Giant had … a foot.

PaletteSwap is all about equal opportunity. They enlisted Tom Kelly who did a tribute to WCW’s first game for the NES, simply titled WCW Wrestling.

Rather than swap out the Road Warriors – Hawk and Animal – from the original cover as Rusty did to Hogan, Kelly decided to display them in silhouette, both as recognition of their iconic status in wrestling (you know exactly who they are) as well as a nod to their alternate attire, if you will: the red and white colors of The Legion of Doom in the WWF. Kelly even added a catchphrase to the packaging: Be a Video Warrior! which is something I would have desperately wanted to be in 1990.

Check out PaletteSwap’s Website and Tumblr for more Wrestling Videogame Tributes this month as well as their regular interpretations of videogames. Also, you can support Rusty Shackles via Twitter, Website and his new site, Insert Quarter Bin, that has an amazing Super Mario Brothers poster up right now. Show your appreciation for Tom Kelly via his Twitter and DeviantArt pages.
