I Was There: Ring of Honor’s Final Battle

But Steen sights were not set on just his former tag partner; they were set on all of Ring Of Honor. He professed his desire to be the ROH World Champion and would take down the entire company to do so. Well, he half succeeded. Steen became ROH Champion and looked unstoppable. So the company looked to the one man that stopped Steen before: El Generico. The two did battle at Final Battle 2012 in Ladder Wars.

IMG_1475Unlike their 2010 match, Ladders were sanctioned and needed to end the match. But that’s not the only ladder at play. Steen and Generico just ladders as weapons, as chairs and even as tables in an effort to eliminate each other.

Using 4 Ladders, Steen and Generico constructed and double “table” to help them reach the title belt that swung overhead. Their design was also the biggest moment of the match.

IMG_1485Steen hit El Generico with a low blow, just like in 2009, and gave El Generico a package piledriver THROUGH THE LADDER! Steen retained and this was El Generico’s last match in Ring of Honor.

But this feud left its mark on champion Kevin Steen. He competed against Mike Bennett at Final Battle 2013 wearing the promotional t-shirt from Final Battle 2012: the shirt had a face that was half Steen and half Generico. It was a tribute to the war they waged on each other inside the Hammerstein Ballroom’s walls.

20131213_3MBROH_029This year, Ring of Honor is in a new venue with all new rivalries. They’re looking to leave their mark on Terminal 5 the way Steen and Generico did at the Hammerstein. We’ll be there to see it live. Check out our Twitter List and check back here for another I Was There.
