Snapshots: The Warrior Spirit

One of our favorite sagas is that of Rising Phoenix, a lawyer who decides to follow her true passion and become a professional wrestler. The entire story is illustrated by Gavin Aung Than of ZenPencils.com who takes famous quotes and uses them for the comic’s theme. Phoenix’s decision to leave the court room for the wrestling ring was inspired by Howard Thurman:

Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes
you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is
people who have come alive.

When the challenges of being a pro wrestling start to wear down Phoenix physically and emotionally, a quote from Marie Curie gives her the resolve to keep going forward:

Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that?
We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves.
We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this
 thing must be attained.

When we next see Phoenix Rising, she has gone from the mid-card on the independent circuit to a marquee match at Wrestlema… the sign’s cut off.

In a version of life imitating art, the quote that inspired this edition of ZenPencils comes from The Ultimate Warrior and his 4/7/14 speech on Monday Night RAW. As we all know, this was his last appearance as he suddenly passed away the day after. Gavin covers the entire emotional rollercoaster this speech contains.

The speech and the comic both cover what it’s like to be not only remembered but what it’s like to be an inspiration. The legacy of the Ultimate Warrior, in this comic and in life, is one of inspiration.

“No WWE talent becomes a legend on their own. Every man’s heart one
day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe their final breath. And
if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the
body of others and makes them believe deeper, in something larger
than life then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized. By the
story tellers, by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honor him
and make the running the man did live forever. You, you, you, you,
you, you are the legend makers of Ultimate Warrior. In the back I
see many potential legends. Some of them with warrior spirits. And
you will do the same for them. You will decide if they lived with
the passion and intensity. So much so that you will tell your
stories and you will make them legends, as well. I am Ultimate
Warrior. You are the Ultimate Warrior fans. And the spirit of The
Ultimate Warrior will run forever!”

Gavin shows Warrior inspiring Phoenix (if you go back to the first comic, there’s a Warrior poster on the wall, while she is studying) no matter her path. Now, as a top wrestler, Phoenix is inspiring others. The news of Warrior’s passing inspires her pay tribute to Warrior while at the showcase of the immortals. In becoming an inspiration, you become immortal.
